Global Positioning System

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are hand held receivers that pick-up radio signals transmitted from satellites that circle the earth. They then process the information in order to calculate your positions (hence the term satellite navigation). A persons position can be displayed either on or off-road with the integration of ordnance survey maps or road maps. GPS devices are often used to aid traditional navigation and for emergency purposes.

Walkers will use GPS to follow pre-programmed routes that they have installed themselves. It may also give information as a grid reference of longitude and latitude, altitude and the surrounding landscape profile. A GPS may also inform you of the distance to the next pre-programmed waypoint or to the end of your walk. Remember to take spare batteries, and just because you have a GPS there's no harm in learning how to use a map and compass too!

Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex offers breathable comfort and durable waterproof protection for a wide range of outdoor activities, and is ideal for walking in the countryside as they help to protect you from even the most severe weather or a simple unpredictable shower. There are different types of Gore-Tex available. Thicker grades of Gore-Tex are more waterproof and more durable but they are not as lightweight, packable or breathable as thinner grades of Gore-Tex.
